The Doctors' e-Cohort Study is a longitudinal study funded by the Australian Research Council in partnership with Queensland Health and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and it aims to examine patterns of recruitment and retention in the Australian medical practitioner workforce.

The personal and public health consequences of a shortage and maldistribution of doctors in Australia, and particularly in Queensland, have been highly publicised. Job retention rates and the safety and quality of medical practice are influenced by multiple factors including the mental and physical health, gender, and varying motivations and workplace expectations of different generations of graduates.

The Doctors' e-Cohort Study is using innovative technology to undertake a comprehensive exploration of the factors influencing the career decisions of Australian doctors and medical students, and the recruitment and retention of doctors in metropolitan, rural and remote regions.

The first round of recruitment for this study occurred between April 2008 and August 2009. More than 1800 doctors and medical students joined the study in the first recruitment wave.

The Doctors' e-Cohort Study is currently recruiting a second cohort of participants.  In this recruitment round, the focus is on the issues faced by MEDICAL STUDENTS. We invite all students enrolled in Year 1 of the MBBS program at The University of Queensland in 2010 to join the study now.
