Current Research Projects
The Doctors' e-cohort Study is a longitudinal study that aims to examine patterns of recruitment and retention in the Australian medical practitioner workforce and medical student populations.
The research aims are to:
- Describe patterns of doctors' employment including full time, part time and casual employment, across the specialties over time and the major factors influencing doctors' decisions to participate in particular work patterns
- Describe patterns of employment of doctors in metropolitan, regional and rural Australia over time and to identify the major factors influencing doctors' decisions to work in particular areas
- Establish the prevalence of stress-related illnesses and injuries among Australian doctors and to describe the possible effects of these issues over time on workforce retention, the safety and quality of practice and drug and alcohol use
- Establish the impact of international medical graduates (overseas trained doctors currently filling medical practitioner vacancies in Australia) on the Australian medical workforce, including an examination of stress-related illnesses, injuries and safety and quality of practices in this group.
