Career Choice of Prevocational Hospital Doctors in Queensland:  A Cross-sectional study

Dear Potential Study Participant,

Welcome to the Career Choices of Prevocational Hospital Doctors Study! The Prevocational Hospital Doctors Study is a cross-sectional study which is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in partnership with Queensland Health.  We are working with the Medical Education Unit and Queensland Medical Education and Training at your hospital to examine the vocational intentions, in terms of both specialty area and geographical location, of prevocational hospital doctors in Queensland and the factors influencing this intent. The study is also investigating how prevocational doctors perceive the quality of their learning environment.

In 2010, all interns (PGY1), Junior House Officers (PGY2), Senior House Officers and Principal House Officers at The Townsville Hospital and Mackay Base Hospital are being invited to participate in this study. It is anticipated that the study will provide important information to inform education and workforce policy for the medical profession. Your participation in this study will involve completing a 10-15 minute on-line survey that seeks information related to your basic demographics, workplace environment and career intentions.  If you agree to be involved, you can access the survey by clicking Continue.  Your consent to participate in this study will be indicated when you click Continue and answer the first question.

Participation in this survey is both anonymous and confidential. No personally identifying information is being collected therefore your anonymity will be preserved. Any publications that arise from the study will report on aggregate data only. All data will be maintained on a secure computer server owned by the University of Queensland. Data will be retained for five years after completion of the study and publication of results. You will be able to print out your survey responses on completion of the survey. It should be noted that participation in this project is purely voluntary and that there will be no adverse consequences should you choose not to participate.

This study has been reviewed and approved by the Low Risk Review Boards of Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and the Townsville Hospital.  Should you wish to discuss the study with someone not directly involved, in particular in relation to matters concerning policies, information about the conduct of the study or your rights as a participant, or should you wish to make an independent complaint, you can contact the Coordinator or Chairperson, Human Research Ethics Committee, or telephone (07) 4796 1140.
